Overview
Explore advanced and inverted uses of the second conditional structure.
Core Structure (B1 review)
- If-clauseIf + past simple → imaginary or unlikely situation
- Main clausewould / could / might + base verb
- FormalUse were for all persons: If I were promoted…
- B2 tipCould/might replace would to add uncertainty: I might consider it.
Advanced B2 Patterns
- InvertedWere it not for the cost, we would proceed. (formal)
- unlessUnless + affirmative = if … not: Unless you applied, you wouldn't be considered.
- providedI'd accept, provided (that) the salary were competitive.
- as long asShe'd join as long as the role were part-time.
Common B2 Mistakes
- ❌ If I would study harder → ✅ If I studied harder (no 'would' in if-clause)
- ❌ If I was you → ✅ If I were you (formal/exam standard)
- ❌ Unless you don't apply → ✅ Unless you apply (unless is already negative)
- ❌ Confusing 2nd conditional (imaginary present) with 3rd (imaginary past)
When to use

Academic writing
If the sample size were larger, the results might differ.
Negotiation
We'd sign the contract, provided that the terms were adjusted.
