What Are Interjections?
- EmotionOh! Wow! Oops! Yikes! — express sudden feelings
- GreetingHi! Hello! Hey! — used to greet or attract attention
- ResponseYes! No! Sure! Great! — quick agreement or disagreement
- ThinkingHmm, Erm, Well, Um — fillers and hesitation sounds
Punctuation Rules
- Strong emotion: use exclamation mark → Wow! That is amazing.
- Mild expression: use a comma → Well, I suppose that is correct.
- Stand-alone: capitalise if it begins a sentence → Oh! I forgot.
- Mid-sentence filler: lowercase after comma → She said, well, she was busy.
Usage Notes
- Interjections are grammatically independent — they do not connect to the sentence.
- Avoid in formal writing — prefer clear vocabulary over filler words.
- ❌ Ouch, I hurted my foot → ✅ Ouch! I hurt my foot.
When to use
Surprise
Wow! I didn't expect that at all.
Pain/Regret
Ouch! That really hurt.
Greeting
Hey! Good to see you again.
