Understand interjections — words expressing emotion used in speech and informal writing.

What Are Interjections?

  • EmotionOh! Wow! Oops! Yikes! — express sudden feelings
  • GreetingHi! Hello! Hey! — used to greet or attract attention
  • ResponseYes! No! Sure! Great! — quick agreement or disagreement
  • ThinkingHmm, Erm, Well, Um — fillers and hesitation sounds

Punctuation Rules

  • Strong emotion: use exclamation mark → Wow! That is amazing.
  • Mild expression: use a comma → Well, I suppose that is correct.
  • Stand-alone: capitalise if it begins a sentence → Oh! I forgot.
  • Mid-sentence filler: lowercase after comma → She said, well, she was busy.

Usage Notes

  • Interjections are grammatically independent — they do not connect to the sentence.
  • Avoid in formal writing — prefer clear vocabulary over filler words.
  • Ouch, I hurted my foot → ✅ Ouch! I hurt my foot.
