Overview
Front elements of a sentence for emphasis and stylistic effect in spoken and written English.
Types of Fronting
- AdverbialOnly after extensive review did they reach a decision.
- ObjectThis proposal I strongly support.
- ComplementParticularly striking was the absence of evidence.
- Topic-commentAs for the timeline, that will be addressed separately.
When Inversion is Required
- Negative/restrictive adverbials always trigger inversion: Only, Never, Rarely, Seldom, Not until
- Pattern: Adverbial + auxiliary + subject + verb
- Complement fronting (adjective phrase) also uses inversion: Particularly impressive was her analysis.
- Object fronting and As-for structures do NOT require inversion
Common C1 Mistakes
- ❌ Only then he realised → ✅ Only then did he realise (inversion required)
- ❌ Particularly the report was impressive → ✅ Particularly impressive was the report
- ❌ Never I have seen → ✅ Never have I seen (subject-auxiliary inversion)
- ❌ Only after review the board approved → ✅ Only after review did the board approve
