Overview
Master all types of inversion — after negative adverbials, with conditionals, and for emphasis.
Types of Inversion
- NegativeNever have I encountered such a complex case.
- ConditionalWere it not for her support, the project would fail.
- So + adjSo compelling was the argument that no one objected.
- Not onlyNot only did costs rise, but quality also fell.
Conditional Inversion
- 2nd conditional: Were I in your position, I would reconsider.
- 3rd conditional: Had I known, I would have acted sooner.
- Polite offer: Should you require assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.
- All three replace 'if' — formal written, legal, and business English.
Common Mistakes
- ❌ Had I know → ✅ Had I known (past participle required)
- ❌ Were not it for → ✅ Were it not for (fixed word order)
- ❌ Using formal inversion in casual speech — it sounds unnatural outside formal contexts.
