Forms

  • +am/is/are + verb-ing
  • am not / isn't / aren't + verb-ing
  • ?Am / Is / Are + subject + verb-ing?
  • Yes, she is. / No, they aren't.

-ing Spelling Rules

  • Most verbs: add -ing → playing, reading
  • Silent -e: drop e, add -ing → making, writing
  • Short vowel + consonant: double it → running, sitting

Stative Verbs (no -ing!)

  • ❌ I am knowing → ✅ I know
  • ❌ She is believing → ✅ She believes
  • No -ing: know, like, love, hate, want, need, seem, understand

Right Now

She is talking on the phone.

Temporary Situation

I'm staying with my aunt this week.

Future Arrangement

We are meeting at seven.
