Overview

'All' refers to every item in a group. 'Some' refers to an unspecified amount (used in affirmatives and offers). 'Any' is used in negatives and questions. Each can be a determiner (some students, any help) or pronoun (Some arrived early. Is there any?). Their usage with countable and uncountable nouns differs.

Core Distinctions

  • allall — the whole amount: all the milk, all my friends
  • somesome — a positive quantity: some water, some people
  • anyany — questions/negatives/conditions: any milk?, not any left
  • nono — zero: no time, no students

some vs any in Questions

  • any: neutral questions — Is there any milk?
  • some: offers / requests — Would you like some tea?
  • some: expecting yes — Can I have some help?
  • any = 'it doesn't matter which': Take any seat you like.

Common Mistakes

  • ❌ I don't have some time → ✅ any time (negatives use any)
  • All the people left → ✅ All the people left (no double 'all the the')
  • ❌ There isn't no food → ✅ There isn't any food (no double negative)

When to use
