Overview
Adverbs modify verbs (She spoke quickly), adjectives (very tall), other adverbs (quite slowly), or whole sentences (Unfortunately, we lost). They answer questions of how, when, where, how often, and to what degree. Most adverbs of manner are formed by adding -ly to an adjective.
Types of Adverbs
- MannerHow? quickly, carefully, well, hard, fast
- FrequencyHow often? always, usually, often, sometimes, never
- DegreeHow much? very, quite, too, enough, extremely
- TimeWhen? now, yesterday, already, soon, recently
Position Rules
- Manner: usually after the verb/object — She drives carefully.
- Frequency: before the main verb, after be — He always arrives late.
- Degree: directly before the adjective/adverb — It's very cold.
- Never between verb and object: ❌ She speaks fluently English
Common Mistakes
- ❌ She sings beautiful → ✅ She sings beautifully
- ❌ He works hardly → ✅ He works hard (no -ly)
- ❌ I usually am tired → ✅ I am usually tired
