Overview
The past continuous tense is formed with was/were + verb-ing. It describes actions that were in progress at a specific moment in the past, background events in a narrative, or two actions happening simultaneously. Example: I was watching TV when the phone rang.
Past continuous structure

Key uses
- Interrupted action: I was eating when she called. (past continuous + when + past simple)
- Parallel actions: While he cooked, she was reading.
- Background setting: It was raining and the wind was blowing.
- Emphasising duration: She was working all morning.
Common Mistakes
- ❌ She was talk on the phone. → ✅ She was talking on the phone.
- ❌ Was you sleeping? → ✅ Were you sleeping?
- ❌ I were reading. → ✅ I was reading.
