Overview
The present continuous tense (also called the present progressive) is formed with am/is/are + verb-ing. It describes actions happening right now, temporary situations, and fixed future plans. Example: She is studying for her exam.
Forms
- +am/is/are + verb-ing
- –am not / isn't / aren't + verb-ing
- ?Am / Is / Are + subject + verb-ing?
- ✓Yes, she is. / No, they aren't.
-ing Spelling Rules
- Most verbs: add -ing → playing, reading
- Silent -e: drop e, add -ing → making, writing
- Short vowel + consonant: double it → running, sitting
Stative Verbs (no -ing!)
- ❌ I am knowing → ✅ I know
- ❌ She is believing → ✅ She believes
- No -ing: know, like, love, hate, want, need, seem, understand
When to use
Right Now
She is talking on the phone.
Temporary Situation
I'm staying with my aunt this week.
Future Arrangement
We are meeting at seven.
